What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
  • We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school.
  • Our classroom practices support and extend high potential and gifted students.
  • We identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Our teachers differentiate learning tasks to meet the diverse needs of learners and provide regular opportunities for flexible groupings, allowing students to work with peers who share similar learning goals or strengths.
  • Students who demonstrate achievement beyond their current stage level, are supported to access learning at the next stage to maintain appropriate challenge and engagement.
  • Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Across our school
  • Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom.

  • Student talent and high potential are recognised, celebrated and extended through a rich range of cultural, creative and community-based learning experiences. During NAIDOC Week and On Country visits, students with strengths in performing arts have opportunities to develop and showcase their abilities through song, dance and storytelling, deepening cultural knowledge and expression.

  • Gamillarray Language and Culture lessons further extend high potential students through drama, narrative performance and creative interpretation, allowing them to apply advanced skills in communication, imagination and cultural understanding.

  • Students with visual arts strengths are supported to develop their artistic potential and present their work in community showcases such as the Walgett Show art display and our NAIDOC week artworks.

  • Our boys have the opportunity to participate in the didgeridoo group, allowing them to develop musical skills, cultural knowledge, and confidence through performance and collaboration. This program complements our broader enrichment offerings and supports the extension of high potential students in the performing arts.

  • Our school identifies and supports students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities such as robotics claymation, sewing, chess club, baking and gardening club.

  • All our students, including high potential and gifted learners, are encouraged to develop leadership skills and take on meaningful leadership roles. Opportunities are provided through Student Parliament including leadership roles such as school captains and House captains, as well as targeted programs such as Lead like a Girl, Sista and Bro Speak and Gaba Warrangal Malagan (Strong Young Teenage Girls), and AECG initiative for female student leadership.

These initiatives empower students to build confidence, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility, while fostering cultural pride, community engagement, and the capacity to positively influence their peers and school community.

  • Our students participate in differentiated Physical Education programs that cater to their individual strengths, interests and skill levels. They also have opportunities to represent our school in the Ricky Walford Shield, Jenny Wright Shield and Steve 'Bear' Hall Shield, connecting and competing with schools from across the district. These experiences promote teamwork, confidence and strong community relationships.

Across NSW
  • Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.

  • Statewide/NSW Department of Education level support is available for our high potential and g

  • High potential learners in music are extended through specialist programs, including Moorambilla Voices for vocal development and Japanese Taiko Drumming which offer advanced training, ensemble skills and unique pathways for artistic growth.
